There is no cut and dry definition for how big a large backpack should be. For the sake of argument they have been defined on this site as over 80 litres which is more than enough to pack a lot of gear.

Large backpacks are generally only needed by expedition leads who carry extra equipment, if you have a lot of gear for specialist activities such as rock climbing etc…or if you plan to be on the road for a long time!

Before you buy a large backpack, make sure you’re not packing too much.
