A somewhat awkward expression, the term ‘Gregory backpacking backpacks’ is often used to differentiate between other types of Gregory backpacks such as mountain backpacks which are primarily designed for alpine adventures and the smaller hiking backpacks which tend to be for short 1-2 day hikes.
Commonly used for camping, outdoor and general backpacking adventures, Gregory backpacking backpacks are probably what Gregory are most well-known for. They are the mainstay of the Gregory range and are the kind of backpacks that you will typically find being used on a camping trip by novices and expedition leads alike.

Starting in the 35 liter capacity range and spanning up to the 95 liter capacity range, Gregory’s backpacking backpacks product line comprises of four packs based on their ‘Response’ suspension technology and four ventilated ‘Z’ models based on their ‘Jetstream LTS’ suspension technology.
Response Technology
Gregory’s Response suspension comes in two flavours. ‘CFS’ (Custom Fit Suspension) is used for the bigger backpacks such as the Whitney 95, Palisade 80 and the women’s specific Deva 85 backpack.
‘Response CFS‘ features twin aluminum stays with piston-like movement that support heavy loads with enhanced waist-belt flexibility and a 5-point waist-belt angle adjustment for a perfect fit on the hips.
On the other hand, ‘Response AFS‘ (Auto-Fit Suspension) is found in the two Baltoro models and the women’s Deva 70 and Deva 60 Gregory backpacking backpacks. Amongst other features, ‘Response AFS’ makes do with a single aluminum stay and is built with an auto-fit rotating waist-belt to register your hip-angle.
Jetstream LTS Technology
‘Jetstream LTS’ is another Gregory backpack suspension system designed to support the weight of a fully packed backpacking backpack yet still allow for greater airflow across the back thus allowing sweat to evaporate more easily.
Gregory’s ventilated backpacks are best if you plan to hike in really warm climates or if you’re the kind of person who feels like you’ve been swimming rather than hiking after a day on the trail!
