Baltoro 70 – Review
The Baltoro 70 was the 2008 Backpacker Magazine Editors’ Choice winner designed for the backcountry adventurer seeking a high performance pack. If you’re not going lightweight, this is still one of the most comfortable packs on the market. It is extremely strong and will survive being thrown off trains and more than a few drops off cliffs.
Built with Auto-Fit suspension that allows the frame to pivot with your body as you hike and featuring a waterproof bottom, stretchable side pockets and much more, the Baltoro 70 is a pack that backpackers love to rant and rave about.
Such is the popularity of the Baltoro 70 that Gregory have released in 2011, the Baltoro 65 and Baltoro 75.
Hydration
An internal sleeve on the inside of the pack right against your back will hold a hydration bladder of upto 3 litres. Ports are available to run the tube through but you may need a clip to attach it to the shoulder straps.
Load
Most reviewers have packed this back between 30 and 50 lbs and found it to be comfortable and well-balanced.
Suspension/ Fit
The Baltoro 70 sits nicely and is really comfortable on long, heavy trips. The load feels a lot lighter due to the Auto-Fit Suspension system.
Gripes
Admittedly some features such as a detachable fanny-pack are sacrificed on the Baltoro and if this is important then the Z65 or Palisade 80 which come with removable top lids may be more suitable choices.
Pockets
The Gregory Baltoro 70 Backpack is an ideal weekend pack for hikers who like to stay organized, thanks to its three access points into the main compartment and a large front pocket.
The sleeping bag compartment is big and will fit your extra gear on top of the sleeping bag without a problem.
The waist belt is extremely well padded and has extra zippered pockets where you can stash your little trinkets. The pack also has a multitude of places to clip carabiners on to if needed.
